Gen Z’s Obsession with Being Rich: A Closer Look at the Financial Realities and Dreams of the Youngest Generation
The latest study from Intuit Credit Karma has revealed that despite facing financial challenges, Gen Z and millennials are obsessed with the idea of being rich. According to the study, 44% of Gen Z and 46% of millennials reported an obsession with wealth, compared to only 27% of the general American population.
One possible explanation for this obsession is the concept of “money dysmorphia,” where individuals feel insecure about their financial status regardless of the reality. This phenomenon was prevalent among 43% of Gen Z and 41% of millennials surveyed, far higher than the 29% of the overall population.
Financial experts suggest that economic challenges such as housing affordability and student debt have contributed to this obsession with wealth among younger generations. The fear of financial instability, coupled with constant social media comparison, has fueled the desire to achieve financial security and wealth.
Despite these challenges, there is hope for Gen Z and millennials to improve their financial situations. By setting clear goals, making a financial plan, and focusing on building savings, individuals can take steps towards achieving financial stability.
Furthermore, there is a potential for a significant wealth transfer in the coming years, as Baby Boomers pass on their wealth to their children. This shift could result in millennials and some Gen Z individuals inheriting a substantial amount of wealth, potentially changing their financial outlook in the future.
Overall, the study sheds light on the complex relationship younger generations have with money and wealth, highlighting the need for financial education and planning to navigate these challenges effectively.
