Luxury Resale Market Booms, Reaching $49.3 Billion in Sales Worldwide

The luxury resale market has been thriving since the start of the pandemic, with approximately $49.3 billion (€45 billion) worth of secondhand luxury products sold worldwide in 2023, according to estimates from Bain & Company. Online resellers like the RealReal and Vestiaire Collective have made pre-owned designer items more accessible to the masses, leading to a doubling in the size of the resale market over the past four years.

However, not everyone is pleased with this trend. Some fashion houses are concerned about the potential sale of counterfeit goods on secondhand websites due to inadequate authentication checks. Additionally, brands are frustrated that consumers can now easily determine which designer items hold their value and which ones do not.

Despite these challenges, some luxury brands are finding ways to capitalize on the booming resale market. For example, Hermès pieces are not only holding their value but can actually fetch a premium on the secondhand market, with pre-owned handbags selling for 25 percent more than new ones. On the other hand, brands like Gucci, Balenciaga, and Bottega Veneta have seen a decline in the resale value of their goods.

To maintain value in the resale market, some luxury players are partnering with resale websites or launching their own platforms. Burberry has teamed up with Vestiaire Collective, while Gucci has partnered with The RealReal. Rolex has even introduced a certified pre-owned watch program to offer verified pre-owned timepieces.

While the resale market works well for high-value, low-volume brands like Rolex, clothing designers and handbag makers may struggle to buy back large amounts of pre-owned stock without diluting their profits. Despite these challenges, luxury brands must find a way to capitalize on the growing resale market as it shows no signs of slowing down.
